COOKEVILLE, TN — This year’s Cougar Run shattered every fundraising record in school history, bringing in $61,000 for the PTO. Organizers credit a single, strategic change to the event: the pace car was replaced by new PE teacher Coach Tyler, 26, running the route shirtless.
“We noticed a real shift in engagement,” said Volunteer Coordinator Kinsley Ashford. “Last year we had to beg moms to sign up. This year the volunteer form crashed in four minutes. The Mile 2 water station, which is where Coach Tyler stretches, had a waitlist of 40 women. Mile 4 had one volunteer, and she’s from the zoned district.”
Many moms who had previously described themselves as “not runners” completed the 5K three or four times. Several were observed maintaining a consistent distance of approximately six feet behind Coach Tyler for the entire course. One mom set a personal record, then asked whether the record could be “verified in person, maybe over coffee.”
Coach Tyler, reached after the event, said he was happy to help and that he mostly just wanted the kids to have fun. He then asked whether it was normal for parents to ask for his Venmo “for tips,” and whether someone could stop leaving protein smoothies on his car.
The children also ran. According to organizers, they seemed to enjoy it.
Proceeds will go toward a splash pad for the teachers’ lounge. Coach Tyler has been booked as pace car for the next seven years.
